Smoked fish is distinguished by its unique taste and aroma, but storing it requires special care. Under improper conditions, it can spoil quickly and lose its rich, pleasant flavor.
Let’s find out how long different types of smoked fish can be kept in the refrigerator, how to store them correctly, and in which containers they are best placed.

How Long Does Smoked Herring Keep in the Refrigerator?

Herring is one of the most popular smoked fish. However, its storage time depends on how it has been processed:

Cold-Smoked Herring

Cold-smoked herring Darfresh in vacuum packaging is very tasty, firm, and moderately salty. It is one of the best fish varieties, rich in essential and beneficial vitamins for the body.

The product can be stored in the refrigerator (+2…8°C) for 45 days from the date indicated on the package if it is hermetically sealed. Hermetic sealing ensures the product’s maximum freshness. If the package is opened, it is best to consume the product within 5-7 days. A glass container is an ideal choice because it does not absorb odors and preserves the natural aroma of the fish. If storing in the fridge, wrap the fish tightly in aluminum foil, parchment paper, or food-grade plastic, then place it in a plastic or glass container to prevent odor from spreading.

Cold-Smoked Mackerel

Mackerel has a firm texture and excellent taste. Special Darfresh packaging preserves the product’s flavor and protects it from environmental impact. However, long-term storage requires careful attention.

How Long Does Mackerel Last?

Sealed (unopened package) in the refrigerator (+2…+8°C) - 45 days from the date indicated on the package. If unopened, it is best to store it in its original Darfresh packaging in the fridge. Opened package in the refrigerator (+2…+8°C) - 5–7 days (best to consume quickly). It is recommended to transfer opened fish into a glass container with a tight lid to prevent it from absorbing odors from other products. Wrap it in food-grade plastic, parchment paper, or foil, and place it in a container if a glass jar is not available.

Which Containers Are Best for Storing Smoked Fish?

  • Glass container is ideal because it does not absorb odors and preserves the aroma.
  • Vacuum packaging and isolating from air significantly extends storage time.
  • Foil or food-grade plastic is the option if no other option is available, wrap the fish tightly.

Not Recommended:

  • Plastic container- if the fish comes into direct contact with plastic, it may acquire an unpleasant taste.
  • Metal container - it may react with the fish and alter its flavor.
